Our Statement on Reproductive Rights and the Importance of Family Building Freedom
At OC Fertility + OC Biogenix we are fortunate to live and practice in a reproductively progressive state, California. However, our hearts go out to patients and colleagues struggling in states not equally fortunate to access such services freely.
The recent Alabama ruling claiming that frozen embryos are legally “children and people” is devastating to those attempting to grow their families. We vehemently advocate for the freedom to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, including without limitation creation and freezing of embryos as a fundamental aspect of reproductive rights.
While we are thrilled that the Alabama House and Senate have passed bills today addressing the issues with the recent personhood ruling that is aimed at protecting IVF, we know there is still work to be done and that this is only a small step in the right direction of making sure IVF is fully protected in all states.
In the United States today, nearly 2% of the population is conceived by IVF and many embryos are needed to successfully create one liveborn child. IVF treatments encourage family building, which aligns with our society prioritizing family values, regardless of political stance. To discourage successful fertility treatments by illegalizing embryo freezing is contrary to this agenda, as it will reduce success for families attempting to conceive and halt such treatments altogether by placing physicians providing these treatments on defense.
Individuals and couples should have autonomy to explore fertility options privately with their doctor, without undue interference or restrictions by the government. IVF offers hope and opportunity for those struggling with infertility to realize their dreams of parenthood. Upholding this freedom is not only a matter of reproductive choice and equity, but also a recognition of the diverse paths to building families and fostering individual well-being.
OC Fertility + OC Biogenix protests the notion of granting embryos personhood rights. While embryos possess potential for life, they DO NOT possess the attributes or capacities that define personhood. Granting such rights would not only undermine the bodily autonomy and reproductive rights of individuals, but also pave the way for intrusive legal and moral implications. It is essential to prioritize the well-being and autonomy of individuals over the abstract status of embryos.
We must do more to protect reproductive equity and family building rights for all. OC Fertility + OC Biogenix stands in solidarity with the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Resolve, and The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
With appreciation,
