Fertility Preservation Q & A

What is fertility preservation?

Women have a biological window during which they’re most fertile and able to conceive. But, not all women are ready to start their families at that time.

With fertility preservation, you have the option to save your eggs, your partner’s sperm, and any reproductive tissue, so you have the option of getting pregnant in the future.

Should I consider fertility preservation?

Many women are candidates for fertility preservation. You may have a disease, an education or career goal, a fertility condition, financial concerns, or a personal hardship that makes it so you’d prefer to delay pregnancy or preserve your eggs.

Fertility preservation may be an appropriate choice if you face the following:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • An autoimmune disease that requires extensive treatment, such as lupus
  • Genetic issue that affects your future fertility
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals

Men may also face health or personal issues that make it so it is best to delay pregnancy. Men who have a declining sperm count, exposure to toxic medications (chemotherapy), or work in high-risk occupations also run the risk of diminished fertility. A man may have sperm frozen for future use.

What fertility preservation options are available?

Embryo freezing is an effective option for women who want to preserve their fertility. During the procedure, their OC Fertility doctor removes mature eggs and fertilizes them with sperm in a laboratory.

The viable embryos that result from this in vitro fertilization procedure are then processed and frozen for future implantation in the woman’s uterus. The viability of the embryos may be determined via comprehensive chromosome screening and pre-implantation genetic testing.

Women may also opt to have their eggs frozen. In this procedure, a woman undergoes hormonal treatments to encourage the release of eggs from the ovaries. After harvesting, the eggs are processed and frozen for future fertilization.

The doctors at OC Fertility also provide sperm donation and egg donation, which can help you still carry a child even if your eggs or your partner’s sperm are not viable.

You can increase the odds that you’ll have a successful pregnancy in the future with fertility preservation. If you’re interested in possibly undergoing elective fertility preservation, call OC Fertility, or book an appointment online to learn more about your options.
