Ovulation Induction Q & A
Why would I need ovulation induction?
Ovulation induction is ideal for women who don’t produce an egg in their monthly cycle. This includes, but is not limited to, women living with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Whether you don’t ovulate regularly or at all, this treatment medically intervenes to encourage your body to create at least one mature egg.
Without ovulation of a mature egg, your body can’t start the pregnancy process. With ovulation induction, you take medication to create one or more mature eggs.
For some women, ovulation induction paired with timed intercourse results in pregnancy. You can also combine it with fertility treatments like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Ovulation induction can still help those patients that ovulate normally. Your OC Fertility doctor can combine it with other fertility treatments to increase your likelihood of getting pregnant. OC Fertility often recommends IUI as a first-line fertility treatment for:
- Male factor infertility
- Cervical problems
- Sexual dysfunction
- Unexplained infertility
If IUI is unsuccessful, your OC Fertility provider may recommend IVF at their state-of-the-art lab. Talk with your OC Fertility doctor about your options. They can help you choose the best path to a healthy pregnancy based on your specific fertility challenges and your preferences.
How does ovulation induction work?
During ovulation induction, you take an oral or injectable medication. The OC Fertility team most commonly uses the following ovulation induction medications:
- Clomiphene citrate pills
- Letrozole pills
- Follicle-stimulating hormone injections
- Human menopausal gonadotropin injections
Over the course of your cycle, your OC Fertility doctor monitors egg production.
They use ultrasound during appointments to measure your egg supply. This measurement allows them to determine when fully matured eggs are ready for fertilization.
Because ovulation induction encourages your body to produce mature eggs, it’s possible to end up with multiple mature eggs at the same time, which could increase your chances of twins, however, your OC Fertility provider will discuss the risks during your treatment cycle.
If you think you may benefit from ovulation induction, call OC Fertility, or make your appointment online today.
